The Psychic Client Styles
Having been a professional psychic for many years, I can tell you that people have different reasons and motives for getting a psychic reading.
In this article, I will explain and describe nine of these motives. These motives, or as I call them, Client Styles, will help others in the New Age field know how to deal with the various types of clients they will encounter. It will also help the layperson figure out what type of client they are, so they can open themselves up to trying a new style.
First, however, when I speak of psychic readings, you should also understand that I’m also referring to intuitive consulting, coaching, and counseling. Mediumship (sometimes called spirit communication), astrology, numerology, and tarot card clients also fit in here.
Psychic Client Style One: Fun Seekers
Many people seek out spiritual sessions because they are fun and entertaining. They don’t really believe in “that sort of stuff,” but they’ll entertain the idea of hearing about their future for the fun of it. Along the way, if something shocking from the past comes up, they may be surprised and wonder, “How did you know that?”
For the most part, they’ll forget about their session shortly after it is over. These people need to be entertained. Trying to get serious with them goes nowhere. So as a reader, have fun and enjoy the session!
It’s unusual for these individuals to pay standard industry session fees. If they can get a quick palm reading or tarot reading for 10 or 15 bucks fine, but to pay 35-100 dollars for a session, in their eyes, it is a waste of money. You’ll usually find them at parties and social gatherings.
Style Two: The Debunker
These people get readings with one purpose in mind. They want to prove the psychic is wrong. It doesn’t matter how good the reader is, everything the reader says is subjected to disapproval. These people will purposely look for flaws in the reading to point them out and heckle the reader. They believe that all readers and sessions are scams meant to take money from the client.
Typically the best way to deal with them is by not dealing with them at all.
“I’m sorry the session doesn’t seem to be going well. I feel bad. Let’s stop the session. I’m going to give your money back. Maybe we can try again some other day?”
This prevents the reader from wasting their time and energy, and it also allows the client to get their money back so they can’t say negative things about the psychic.
Style Three: The Tester
The Tester and Debunker Style share many common characteristics. They both appear skeptical and look for flaws. For clients who have this style, this is true more so at the beginning of the session.
This client has been around long enough to know a few things. They are aware that some readers who work in the field are genuinely attempting to help. They also understand some readers are scam artists just looking to get their money. This client wants to be sure they are getting the “real deal.”
They will typically start by talking about how great some other session in their past was. This is done to see if it shakes up the reader. They are also observing how the reader responds. My typical response is, “It’s great you had such an awesome experience. Let’s hope this reading is amazing too.”
Many times, these clients purposely put up shields. If the reader doing the session isn’t getting any information, or it appears the information is wrong, it’s best to apologize for a bad session and offer their money back. This will typically be enough to get them to drop their shields and ask you to please try again. It’s amazing how much better the energy and information then flows.
Style Four: The Open Minded Skeptic
Of all the client styles, this is the most important. These are people who typically have never had a session before. Some may have had many sessions but maintain a healthy sense of skepticism. This helps to keep them grounded.
If they are the first-time client, they don’t understand the power behind tarot readings, intuitive counseling, spiritual coaching, and mediumship. They want to believe, but they are smart enough to know that not everything is as it seems.
If they have had sessions before, they may understand the importance of these fields, but won’t allow themselves to get carried away by it. These clients tend to be a lot of fun to work with, and it’s best to be open and honest about how you do readings.
Style Five: The Straightforward Curious Client
The Straightforward Curious Client shares a lot in common with the Open-Minded Skeptic. Their purpose for getting a session, however, is different. They want to know what’s coming up in their life and they want to be told the good, the bad, and the ugly.
It’s important as a reader to determine if they really are the Straightforward Curious Style or if they are the Gullible Style.
If they really are a Straightforward Curious Client, not a Gullible Client, give them the type of session they are asking for. Do remind them, however, that they have the power to change the bad and ugly.
Style Six: The Spiritually Enlightened
These people not only believe in such sessions, but they are extremely in touch with their own psychic senses or intuitive powers. Many have also been on a spiritual path for years.
These clients usually absorb information like a sponge and process it after the session. They tend to be easy to read, as they already know all their own answers but are seeking confirmation from their reader.
They take the time to consider the information that has been given to them before making any decisions. When they do make a decision, they use all the information available to them.
Like the Open-Minded Skeptic, the best way to work with them is by just doing the session and being as open and honest as you can.
Style Seven: The Gullible Client
This is a very dangerous client style. These clients will believe anything and everything they hear! They also usually get many sessions. Some will get 3-5 sessions a month, others will want 3-5 a day! This is because they are seeking approval from their reader, and they lack self-confidence in their own decision-making ability.
A reader has a responsibility to remind these clients to do their own research and to fact check. A reader must be very careful about what they say to these clients, as this style can actually make bad things happen just by believing it’s going to happen.
When working with these clients, the reader should aim for the positive as much as possible and gently give negative information.
Style Eight: The Wounded Client
In the case of the Wounded Client, these people have been seriously hurt and are in deep pain. They are now seeking both love and healing. They probably should be seeing a licensed counselor, not a psychic. In my experience, I estimate about 60% of clients fall under this client style.
Most will talk and talk some more. All this talking limits the psychic information that the reader can provide. As with Gullible Clients, aim for the positive and be gentle with the negative information. Additionally, in these sessions, it would be wise to listen more than speak.
These people consider a good session to be one where they leave feeling better and uplifted. They don’t want you making decisions for them, but they do want concrete ideas on what they can do to heal and move forward in life.
Style Nine: The Energy Addiction Seeker
These clients are seeking energy from the reader. They many times will resemble a mix of other Client Styles. The difference is that everything the reader tells them is either wrong, can’t happen, or isn’t possible. Despite this, they will come for a session sometimes as often as 3-5 times a week. They also are known for psychic hopping. In other words, they sometimes have as many as five to ten different psychics they talk to, sometimes on a given day!
A reader has an ethical obligation to cut these clients off or to limit them to the number of sessions they can have. While it may hurt the cash flow, it will help this client type to take more control over their lives and to understand their addiction.
Sessions should focus on addressing the most important issues the client has and helping them to understand they have the power to do things on their own without needing input from others.
Recognizing these clients is easy. If they mention what other psychics have told them or indicate they are seeing another psychic soon, they are probably an Energy Addiction Seeker Client. If you leave the session feeling drained and wiped out, it’s also possible you were dealing with an Energy Addiction Seeker Client.
Closing Comments
It’s important to remember that sometimes a client can fall into more than one of these categories.
These categories are by no means all-inclusive, but they are a starting point for readers and other New Age practitioners to start to think about the types of people they work with.
Likewise, they can help clients understand how their thoughts and behaviors can impact a session as well as life itself.
