Always keep an open mind. This is one of the simplest advices that you can follow to change your life for the better.
Before going on a trip, what’s the first thing that we do? We look up guidebooks or travelogues, read up on the places that we are going to visit and in the process condition our minds to experience the same sights, sounds and tastes that people before us have experienced. So, for instance if you read about someone having a stomach upset after eating the local food, or being disappointed with a much praised view from the top of a hill, learning about these experiences can have the potential to influence your travel experience. You may therefore be extra careful about what you eat or you may not enjoy anything that you eat because you are afraid that it might upset your stomach. Similarly, you may be prejudiced about the sightseeing because you already have read about it and would therefore like to come across as knowledgeable and mature rather than look at things with childlike curiosity.
It’s all in the mind.
What you think matters. It could go both ways. It could spoil your trip or enrich it. It all depends on you and your understanding of how to use the subconscious mind. It’s not only what your conscious mind does but also what your subconscious mind does which can make or mar an experience, a thought, a decision or an action. That’s because you are generally aware of what your conscious mind does, your conscious thoughts and desires but you are not aware of your subconscious thoughts or impressions.
These lie latent or hidden beneath our awareness and often come to the surface in the form of fears and phobias, anxiety and mood swings, lack of confidence and a sense of futility. Instead if you could train your subconscious to produce positive impressions, you could transform, for example, someone who is shy and timid into a happy and cheerful person. Similarly, if you are lethargic, overeating and growing overweight, you can change by training your subconscious to become more energetic, eat healthily and enjoy physical activity. If you think you are addicted or suffer from melancholia, you can kick the addictive habit or find happiness. It’s all in the mind, as they say.
Do you realize what is happening here? We are allowing the presets or the conditioning that our mind has undergone by various external influences to dictate how we feel, act and react to experiences. Instead if we recognize that there is a subconscious mind which sometimes overrules reason and logic, then we can learn how to use the subconscious mind.

Let’s go back to the travel analogy. If instead of accepting everything that we read about a place in a guidebook or a travelogue, we analyze and selectively absorb the information. We exercise objectivity, take mental notes about the place but we also acknowledge the possibility for accidents and not look at incidents as happenstance. In other words, we condition our mind to allow all impressions to exist only as concepts and not precepts.
Keep an open mind.
We tell our conscious mind that we will exercise caution if required but we will not allow irrational fears or anxieties to influence our actions. This is how successful people change their lives for the better. The envision themselves as successful, or happy or healthy, they sow the seeds for their success in their subconscious mind and project it into their personalities. Try this exercise when you are feeling sad or melancholic. Smile. That’s right by just putting on a smile on your face you acknowledge the possibility that you can be happy against all odds. Have you noticed how airline stewardesses rarely seem to be ruffled or distracted? That’s because they are trained not to have a bad day at work. A steward cannot afford to have a bad day at work because that can infect the whole mood in the cabin.
Similarly, if you have a particular emotion or a negative impression that you wish to overcome such as fear or a lack of confidence, the important thing to do is acknowledge that the origin of this negative influence is in your subconscious mind. Then consciously tell yourself that you can change and sow the seeds for the change in your subconscious mind. There are various techniques including hypnosis and meditation which can enable you to get in touch with your subconscious and alter the makeup or the conditioning that exists there, so you can live a fuller, happier and successful life.
Consider a piece of electronic equipment. It comes with a series of presets or factory settings which can be customized so that it functions according to your requirement. Similarly, whatever influences past experiences have had on your subconscious mind, it can be customized and changed to transform your life for the better. When you are going for a drive, you are aware that accidents can happen. So you take necessary precautions to prevent them. This will enable you to not only have a safe journey but enjoy the drive as well. On the other hand, if you allow the possibility of accidents to create fear and disturb your mind, it’s quite possible that you may commit an error and cause an accident. The subconscious is very delicate and that’s exactly why it is also the source of creativity as well as destructive tendencies, reason as well as irrationality.
You can control your subconscious instead of letting it control how you live.
