Matthew 6: 21-26
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Do Not Worry
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
The values of man Vs. God
In this world, a man gives more value to money and material things than his life. When money is given more importance, then naturally, humans will run after it.
The Holy Bible clearly discusses this issue in Matthew 6: 19-21. So running after money will yield only anxiety and fear. If a person earns more, they will have a fear of theft of their prosperity. This creates tension to protect wealth and to become more wealthy. But if a person lacks money, then they will have anxiety for their family and fear about the future of their family and dependents.
That’s why Jesus teaches us not to give more importance to worldly treasures and wealth. They are all temporary, and they will get destroyed one day.
Jesus teaches us what is more important in life in Matthew 6: 25, 26. He says that our life is more important than food. And our body is more important than the clothes we wear.
The value of human life
Jesus emphasized that human life is more important than worldly material things. Our life is given as a gift by God. If God has created us and gave this life to us, then He will take care of the needs of this life.
A man need not worry about his food and shelter as God created all the basic needs of man before creating man. If God provides all the needs of small birds and creatures, then why would He not provide for His children who are made in His own image? It doesn’t mean that man should not work to earn and save for his life and family. But the piling up of treasures should not become an idol for man. It should not be seen as more important than God.
God created man in His own image for the sake of His name to be glorified (Isaiah 43: 21). When man lost the glory of God by sinning against God, God did not leave it as such. But He came to earth to save the human race and gave His own life for them. So human life is so precious in the eyes of God.
We should worry about our souls to be saved. Otherwise, we will be condemned for the blood of Christ shed for us (Hebrews 2: 3, 4). Man has to live this gracious gift of life for the glory of God. If we could lay down our lives for the glory of God, it will be a great honor before God. How pitiful will it be to get all the wealth in the earth and lose our eternal life? (Mark 8: 35-38; I Corinthians 15: 19). If we need to lose our wealth and to suffer for Christ on this earth, it will be a glory in our eternal life (Romans 8: 18).
The value of human body
In 1 Corinthians 6: 19, the Holy Bible says that our body is the temple of God. Our God is the Almighty God whose throne is heaven, and His footstool is the earth. He wants to live in our hearts (Revelations 3: 20).
He has chosen our hearts to be His habitat instead of the buildings built with gold and silver. Since the God who lives in us is Holy, we should protect our bodies and keep them holy and blameless. We should protect our body from sexual immorality and other sins that defile our body, which is the temple of God (1 Peter 1: 14, 15). We should possess our body with sanctification and honor (1Thessalonians 4: 3, 4).
As our body is the temple of God, we need to keep our bodies holy. Our dressing styles should not dishonor the name of the God we worship. Our dresses should be proper, and it should not make the temple of God to become a temptation to sin for others (1 Timothy 2: 9, 10; Romans 13: 14)
By nature, the flesh is bound to sin. But when a man accepts Jesus Christ, he becomes a new creation. And Jesus lives in that person as he is the temple of God. If we give our body as a slave to Christ, then the Holy Spirit, who lives within that person, warns him when he is tempted to sin against God. We should worry about protecting the temple of God from defiling. If we surrender our body as a living sacrifice for the glory of God, it will be pleasing before God (Romans 12: 1).
Overcoming worry and anxiety
Worry and anxiety in a man make him sick and keeps him away from doing what needs to be done. Also, as the Bible states in Matthew 6: 27, worrying about something won’t bring what we need, and it won’t let us live peacefully. We worship a God who calls everyone who is burdened with troubles to put them before Him and be peaceful (Matthew 11: 28, 29).
Instead of complaining about not having material things, we should start to give thanks to the Lord that made us and that provides our daily needs. It will be like a soothing aroma before the Lord, and He will surely meet our needs (1 Thessalonians 5: 18).
If we bring our worries before God in prayer and with thanksgiving, God will fill us with His peace. This cannot be given or taken away by this world or any people in this world (Philippians 4: 6, 7).
If we consider our life and body to be more precious than the material things in the world, then we will seek the things that are good for our life. We will start finding heavenly things that are good for our souls. The material things of the world will be like rubbish when considering the eternal joy kept for us (Philippians 3: 7-11). It will allow us to be calm in any storm, hunger, shortage, etc. Because when we learn to live for God, we will naturally learn to be content in any situation (Philippians 4: 11, 12).
When to worry?
We should not run after material things and worry about them. Still, we need to worry and take care of protecting our bodies and keeping them holy before God. This needs to be done until the end of our lives. We also need to worry and about the salvation of our soul on the last day. We should have constant prayer for the redemption of our soul. We should also pray to bring other people towards the love of God (Jude 1: 20- 24). Only God can give us the ability to withstand all temptations on the earth without falling down.
To receive the promises given to us, we should remove all filthiness from our flesh and keep our life holy before God (2 Corinthians 7: 1). As we have received the gospel of Christ, and we know the way to be blessed. We are responsible for our souls. If we sin presumptuously, then we don’t have a way to escape, and that is a matter to worry about (Hebrews 10: 26, 27).
